Sustainability in action at Birmingham Rep
The Rep has implemented significant sustainability initiatives to reduce its environmental impact. In June 2023, coinciding with the 50th Anniversary of World Environment Day, Birmingham Rep declared a Climate Emergency, committing to becoming carbon neutral within ten years.
The theatre has made great strides in sustainable production practices. For instance, the 2023 production of ‘Withnail and I’ surpassed the Theatre Green Book's Baseline Standard, with 69% of materials reused, and the Props and Furniture department achieving a 94% reuse rate. Similarly, the set for ‘Of Mice and Men’ was redistributed to Worcester Swan’s ‘Romeo and Juliet’, promoting material reuse.
Operational improvements include replacing over 700 lamps and 50 fittings with LEDs, reducing energy consumption. The theatre's energy use and emissions are notably lower than typical theatres, with electricity consumption at 145 Kwh/m² per annum compared to the typical 270 Kwh/m². Additionally, The Rep has signed the Oil Free Sponsorship pledge, refusing fossil fuel funding for cultural work.
The Rep has also introduced mandatory environmental training for staff, launched a cycle-to-work scheme, and integrated sustainability commitments into recruitment practices. An active Environmental Working Group meets regularly to oversee audits, data analysis, and the implementation of environmental policies, ensuring that sustainability is embedded across all departments.
