Cultural integration at Smithfield

The Smithfield Development in Birmingham, led by Lendlease, is an urban regeneration project with a significant cultural dimension. The site is the area formerly occupied by the wholesale markets (now demolished) and where the Indoor Market, Rag Market and Open Market currently operate. Envisioned as a vibrant new district, the masterplan places culture and community at its core, aiming to create a destination that celebrates Birmingham’s rich heritage and diverse cultural identity.

A key feature of the Smithfield Development is its extensive cultural provision, designed to engage both residents and visitors. Plans include spaces for public art, live performances, and cultural festivals, ensuring the development becomes a dynamic hub for creative expression. A central public square is envisioned as a focal point for events and gatherings, while purpose-built venues will host performances, exhibitions, and community activities. These provisions aim to reflect and celebrate the city’s diverse communities, providing inclusive platforms for participation and showcasing local talent.
